AETHIC SPF25:
SPF25 Reef Safe Sun Protection with Science-Backed Ingredients
Broad-spectrum protection through carefully chosen, reef safe ingredients.
Each ingredient in our sunscreen undergoes rigorous testing to ensure its safety on coral, clams and sea urchins, and we exclude some common sunscreen ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which are harmful to coral reefs. The final formula is then tested in its entirety. It passed and left the coral, sea urchins and clams all intact!
Aethic was granted the world’s only PROVEN patented formula for reef safe sunscreen. This came as a result of the research into sun filters, and with the exclusive combination of 3 active ingredients, the formula was developed. Our sunscreen does not contain any harmful chemicals and is free from Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide, making it not harmful for the marine environment and in particular coral reef.

Aethic SPF25 reef safe sunscreen: a conscious choice
Surprisingly, some organic or natural ingredients can harm your skin and also severely damage marine life. Biodegradable is meaningless as things may degrade and still do harm.
We tested a range of sunscreen ingredients and first identified those that would give your skin broad-spectrum and photo-stable protection. Meaning that they would protect you from the most harmful rays and also work better for longer. Protect your skin and the ocean.
The Science of Sun Protection: UVA vs.UVB
Sunlight comprises of various wavelengths, including UVA and UVB rays.
Both penetrate the skin, causing damage:
-
- UVA rays: Deeper penetration, linked to premature aging, wrinkles, and certain skin cancers.
-
- UVB rays: Primarily responsible for sunburn, also contribute to skin cancer development.
Sun Protection Factor (SPF) measures a sunscreen’s ability to block UVB rays. An SPF 25 sunscreen allows approximately 4% of UVB rays to reach your skin, compared to 3% for SPF 30 and 2% for SPF 50+. While higher SPFs offer more protection, SPF 25 provides significant UVB defense for various scenarios:
-
- Limited sun exposure: Spending brief periods outdoors, like walking to work or running errands, may be adequately protected with SPF 25.
-
- Sensitive skin: Individuals with sensitive skin may experience irritation from higher SPF formulas, making SPF 25 a suitable alternative.
-
- Maintaining a tan: While not endorsed for maximizing sun exposure, SPF 25 offers some UVB protection while allowing for gradual tanning.
However, remember:
-
- No sunscreen blocks 100% of UV rays. Sun protection should be layered with shade, protective clothing, and wide-brimmed hats, especially during peak sun hours (10 AM to 4 PM).
-
- Reapplication is crucial. Sweat, water, and towel drying can reduce sunscreen effectiveness. Reapply every 2 hours, or more often if swimming or sweating heavily.
We support the Go Blue Foundation who are working to stop water pollution, protect our oceans and marine life.
